In my previous article we looked at the ‘big illusion’ surrounding the current economic climate. In that article we discussed what appears to be a candidate rich market due to the high number of applicants, is merely a result of the ease with which applications can be sent today and that this does not necessarily translate into increasing the probability of finding the right candidate for the right job. Sifting through the haystack to find the needle is a job in itself and a job best done by a specialist.
Why is specialisation so important?
Now when you board your Sydney to Melbourne and the Captain comes on the air over the PA system and introduces themself in that laconically assuring voice most airline captains use, telling you he has been flying this route for the last fifteen years… and before working for the airline he flew jets in the navy… and when he was a boy he made the best paper aeroplanes in his school… and again in that laconically reassuring voice asks that you simply sit back, relax and enjoy the flight while the crew takes good care of you… when you hear this, well then you know you are in the hands of a specialist…(usually the landing is fair indication as well)… This is different to hearing..
“welcome aboard ladies and gentlemen please bear with me today as this is the first time I have flown a 767 and I need a bit of time to “figure out” which knob does what… but I have driven to Melbourne before and it is a sunny day so as long as I follow the Hume I am sure I will not miss the turn off to Tullamarine”… This is hardly the reassurance you want to hear.
Well it is the same in recruitment… or it should be.
Recruitment consultants should have flown the route before… at the very least they should have worked in the industry in which they are recruiting and they should be experienced and up to date with trends in their local market.
Specialists… Knowledge saves money! - “funny thing is… recruitment consultants should be able to consult”
A Recruitment Specialist… a real recruitment specialist… is someone who has committed to learning everything they can about their niche and will stick to it for the long haul... their knowledge of their industry and market trends, allows them anticipate potential pitfalls and consult with you in advance of starting any work… resulting in a proactive and solution oriented approach that’s saves money before you start. This knowledge will allow them to provide a realistic guide as to whether or not they can successfully help with the role that needs filling.
Specialists… Efficiency and speed in Process
Yes it’s true, time is money and now more than ever you need someone who can get the job done, swiftly and effectively. Placing ads, reading resumes, phone screening, interviewing, reference checking, second interviewing… all these activities take time and cost money. They will take key staff away from their core activities particularly when line managers are involved and with an avalanche of resumes coming through various mediums of technology, the cost of sifting through applications continues to increase. A specialist recruitment consultant has the eye and expertise to do this quickly and efficiently…
Specialists… Access to a Wider Network
Recruitment Specialists do not only rely on ad responses… but will mine their database for good candidates and utilise developed professional networks. The specialist has exact knowledge of where to source the best and most suitable candidates, and the client therefore benefits from a far more extensive pool of appropriate candidates.
Specialists… How do you spot them?
Generally you will know within 2 minutes of talking with them about the industry… they will be able to talk your lingo…they will understand the industry and its predominant culture, they will know a lot of people in your industry and they will have a track record of success… simply ask them how many people they have placed in the last three months in what roles.
But there is one test that will tell you every time whether someone is a professional recruitment specialist… they will be the ones who are prepared to walk away from work. A professional recruitment specialist is judged by their results and if they are not confident of getting a result they will walk away… next months we will discuss the why this is so important….
